Beach Holiday – Kenya has so much beautiful scenery to offer in the mainland, that the tropical coastal areas are often forgotten. On the Indian Ocean you will find long white beaches and turquoise water with dazzling coral reefs with rich marine life. On the coast you will find luxury resorts and hotels. Especially around the towns of Mombasa and Malindi. In the far north is Lamu, which in recent years has become increasingly popular with the international rich and famous, seeking an anonymous holiday.
Hundreds of meters off the coast of Malindi and Mombasa, there are extensive coral reefs. You can walk to the reefs at low tide, or sail there with a traditional sailing boat, a ‘dhow’. Even further from the coast, there are large natural parks under water. These protected areas can be found more among the coast at Shimoni in the south of Kenya and in Watamu and Kilifi. The hotels and resorts along the coast offer a variety of diving lessons and diving excursions.
Safari Kenya – If you plan to take a safari in Kenya make sure you visit the Amboseli National Park. Here you can stay overnight at the foot of the world famous Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli National Park is flat and has few mountains and many swamps making it an unusual setting. Long ago it was a wooded area, but the many elephants here greatly reduced the vegetation. Amboseli means “salty dust” in the language of the Masai. An ideal medium for tracking animal tracks.
Especially in the morning the wildlife goes to the marshes. Here you can take beautiful pictures. Especially the elephants and buffaloes wade through the swamp. Next to the hippos which are also present here. On a clear day early in the morning or at the end of the day you have the chance to make a great photo of the snowy peaks of the Mount Kilimanjaro.
The Nakuru Lake is known for its large population of pink flamingos. These flamingos looks like a pink ribbon, foraging along the shores of the lake. You can drive around the lake and look for rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, gazelles, birds and with luck you can even spot a leopard or lion.
The world famous wildlife reserve Masai Mara, is also a must see during your tour of Kenya. During the great wildebeest migration in the months July/September there are thousands of wildebeest and zebras wading through the river to return to the Serengeti in Tanzania. In the reserve you will be surprised several times by the existing wildlife including the Topi with his “leather look”. Giraffes that extend far beyond the steppes with their long necks and many other species in Mara. You especially will not forget the sunset in Mara. It makes the golden steppe glow.
The Naivasha Lake is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley. Lined with papyrus plants, yellow fever trees and grass meadows. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Here we find the African osprey, and many other typical water birds, like pelicans and cormorants. The lake is rich in fish and crayfish, but also large animals like the hippopotamus stay here.
